Biography

My name is Maru Hernández, and my story begins in the vibrant heart of Guadalajara, Mexico,
a city where History whispers through colonial architecture and art bursts to life on every corner.

Growing up surrounded by murals splashed across buildings, intricate handmade crafts in local homes, and a community that celebrates creativity, I absorbed artistry like a second language. Though I pursued formal education at the University of Guadalajara, my true classroom was the city itself.

This pull toward art wasn't accidental.  My family painted murals in their own walls, and my brothers turned bar alleys and friends' homes into canvases for their bold visions.  Their work thought me that art  is not confined to galleries.  It is a living dialogue between people and places.

Four years ago, I decided to channel this passion into disciplined study, immersing myself in the classical techniques of realism. I utilize two distinct mediums to capture different facets of the human experience.

I prefer charcoal and graphite on portrait drawings to evoke a sense of timelessness.  The monochromatic palette strips away distractions, focusing on the weight of a singular moment captured in time.  In the other hand, I turn to oils for their versatility and inherent vibrancy.  This medium allows me to honor the richness of Latino aesthetics, using color to celebrate an identity that is bold and beautiful.
