Biography

My name is Esmeralda “Esme” Patiño, and I am a mixed media artist based in Denver, Colorado. I am a proud mother of two amazing children and feel incredibly blessed to have a husband who supports me in all of my creative endeavors. I am the daughter of Mexican immigrants who came to Denver in the 1960s, and the youngest of five children. I was raised to be proud of my heritage, and growing up, I developed a deep love for art by admiring local artists in my community.

Creativity has always been part of who I am, but my art practice became especially important after I was diagnosed with Postpartum Depression (PPD), anxiety, and PTSD. Art became my way of expressing everything that was happening in my mind and heart. It has been a powerful tool for helping me overcome both physical and emotional pain. Through the use of bright colors and bold patterns, I strive to bring beauty and joy to even the darkest places of the mind.

At my core, I am a crafter and a completely self-taught artist. I work intuitively and often use craft supplies and unconventional materials in my work. In my mind, if it can be glued or sewn onto a canvas, I will use it. I primarily work with acrylic, watercolor, ink, paper, and yarn, but I am always open to experimenting with new materials. I am also known for recycling and repurposing household items in my art. My style is best described as mixed media collage, reflecting the many layers, textures, and materials I bring together.
I draw deep inspiration from Mexican artisans, especially the vibrant flora and nature motifs found throughout Mexico. I also have a strong love for Día de los Muertos and the brightness, color, and meaning found in that day of remembrance and celebration.

If you ask me who I am, I will tell you that I am a mother first, a student and teacher second, and an artist last. I am always creating in some way—whether I am doodling with pen and paper or working with yarn and a crochet hook. I am forever seeking to learn new things and am always willing to share what I know with others.
