Colorado's Oldest
Latino Arts Organization

The Chicano Humanities & Arts Council (CHAC) was founded in 1978 to address the lack of representation for Chicano art in traditional Colorado galleries during the 1970s.

History

Chicano art played a crucial role in the Chicano Movement, serving as a powerful tool for political protest and cultural affirmation. Recognizing the necessity for artistic voices that reflected community struggles and promoted social justice, Chicano artists and cultural workers collaboratively established CHAC to ensure their stories and heritage were preserved and shared.

Initially, CHAC members innovatively brought art directly to the community, utilizing a van to present exhibitions, educational programs, and engagement opportunities. This grassroots approach highlighted their commitment to accessibility and fostered direct connections with the people.

Almost five decades later, CHAC has expanded significantly, now operating two galleries situated in Denver's historic and contemporary Chicano neighborhoods, offering unique and inviting spaces for cultural expression.

As Colorado's oldest Latinx nonprofit art organization, CHAC continues its vital mission by supporting over 120 diverse artists, ranging from emerging talents to established figures. The organization hosts visual art shows, complemented by performances from local musicians, actors, dancers, writers, and poets.

Welcoming art enthusiasts to their distinct galleries in the Santa Fe and 40 West art districts, CHAC annually organizes over 15 exhibitions and more than 40 workshops, along with various special events, dedicated to showcasing, preserving, and educating the Rocky Mountain regional arts community about the rich tapestry of Latinx, Chicana/o, and other multicultural communities in Colorado.
