SHOW STATEMENT:

"Hip hop was invented in the South Bronx of New York in 1973. Parties were thrown at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, where DJ Kool Herc pioneered the "Merry-Go-Round" technique. By using two turntables, he isolated and extended the percussive "breaks" of funk and soul records to keep dancers on the floor. This was the invention of the DJ.

Rappers began to flow over the beats, and rap was invented. Their lyrics contained knowledge and empowerment, another element of hip hop. Break dancers would B-boy, and these same individuals would take their visual art to the streets and create graffiti art, using spray paint as their medium. These are the elements of Hip Hop culture, which quickly spread across the United States and then the world. A global subculture that we are celebrating in this art show, Free Style Flow," Aqua One.
